C. Henry Steel

What is the difference between I-Beams and W-beams?

Both beams are types of joists that are made from structural steel. Steel beams are often used in construction to ensure that a structure will be physically sound.
The shape of the I-beam strongly resembles a capital "I," which is where the I-beam gets its name. The I-beam comes in only minimal weights per foot.
While the W-beam is still a wide flange steel beam, it comes in as many as 15 different weights per foot. This allows engineers to design projects at minimal cost but maximum support. With more options in the weight of the beam, the engineers have more choice on various sections they can design around.
